THE DIACONATE
The Diaconate is composed of twelve Deacons. The Deacons are members of the church who are elected by the church membership to serve 3 year teams. The Diaconate is under the direction of the Session, and there is an Elder from the Session that acts as a liaison between the two groups. The Deacon is sometimes referred to as a Sheppard and his assigned members, his flock. The members of the church, as well as Affiliate Members, are divided among the 12 Deacons. Families are kept together.
As shepherds with a flock of sheep looks after his sheep, tending to their needs, the Deacon is always ready to serve his flock as needed. He/she keeps track of the members attendance. Contacts the member to let them know they are missed. Aware of the members health problems and offers assistance, and offers help and answers questions as may be needed. Birthday cards, get well cards and notes are sent to the Deacons flock.
The Deacon informs the Pastor or Congregational Care Elder (who is the liaison) of member concerns so that spiritual needs can be addressed; the Session is kept informed of any potential problems that may arise. |
